Content: Born to a close and affectionate Italian family, Ella Grasso had an impressive academic background and soon after school got involved in politics. She served in the Connecticut House and for 12 years as that state's Secretary of State. Two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives were followed by two terms as governor. She was the first American woman ever to be elected governor without having followed her husband into office.
