Content: Speaking to a convention of Illinois Republicans gathered in Springfield on June 17, 1858, Abraham Lincoln quoted the Bible, "A House divided against itself cannot stand." He was referring to a policy for the settlement of Kansas. A policy designed to bring an end to slavery agitation but as he said, "agitation not only has not ceased, but has constantly augmented."
