Content: Virgil Ivan Grissom grew up in Indiana. He joined the Air Force after high school and served with distinction in World War II and Korea. During the 1950s he was given prestigious assignments as flight instructor and test pilot. Therefore, it was natural that when the newly formed National Aeronautics and Space Administration, designed the program to launch an American into space, the clearly competent and talented Grissom should be chosen as one of the first seven Mercury astronauts.
