Lead: Possessing the will to power, Joseph Stalin used raw terror to establish his control first of the Party and then of the Soviet Union.

Intro: A Moment in Time with Dan Roberts.

Content: In 1923 Giovanni Amendola (a 'men do la), an Italian academic and liberal politician, coined a new adjective totalitario while describing the policy of Benito Mussolini. The Italian dictator relished the brutal sound of the word and plagiarized it. In 1926 Giovanni was the victim of the phenomenon he described as he was beaten to death by Mussolini's thugs. Yet, it was not Mussolini who would bring totalitarianism to its full flowering nor was it Adolf Hitler whose loathsome pursuit of a racially pure society brought him the disdain of the civilized world and destruction to Germany. The premier totalitarian was Joseph Stalin. The method he used was Terror.
