Lead: In colonial America divisions, between east and west quickly embroiled the political, religious, economic and social life of the colonies.

Intro.: Dan Roberts and A Moment in Time with Jamestown - Journey of Democracy, tracing the global advance of democratic ideals since the founding of Jamestown, Virginia in 1607.

Content: Beginning with Jamestown, the earliest settlements in North America were on the eastern seaboard. As the number of white colonial immigrants grew, they found the best land had already been snatched up and they were forced to seek their fortunes in the continental interior. It was dangerous because they were claiming land already possessed by Native Americans and it was labor intensive. They had to cut their homes from and sustain their lives on what land and game was available in the wilderness.
