Lead: As time passes, historical figures tend to become remote and are so revered that a true understanding of their lives is impossible. Intro: A Moment in Time with Dan Roberts.

Content: For many Americans, George Washington is an icon. Frozen in the distant past. Revered, untouchable and, therefore, not a little unreal. Yet, as a national leader he was somewhat embarrassed by the adoration heaped on him in his later years. Surely, he would have been equally uncomfortable with the way people have elevated him to a position of near worship in the years since his death.
